My Heroes

My Heroes
Dedicated to my most ardent follower, the Coven Queen of Anti-Fanism
My life has always been inspired by underdogs who preach the truth. The honest and forthright way is never the easy way, and struggling to make change for decency is almost always met with fear, hatred, and resentment among the debased sects who are accustomed to their ignoble – yet comfortable -- ways of life. Truth is truth, however; it does not go away just because some groups are deathly afraid of it. And it always wins in the end, even when the soothsayer is struck down in a desperate attempt to quiet the source of the terrible verity.
Scilicet then, here are some of my heroes, in chronological order.
Jesus Christ. Prophet. Spent His life walking amid the sick and twisted, preaching of truth and decency, and of bringing of the amoral into the light that all men should know the Truth. Encouraged the living of a moral and ethical lifestyle. Nailed to a tree and killed by people who were terrified to hear the truth. Became a martyr to all who believed in His Word. Success in His mission continued far beyond His death, and today there are over 2 billion Christians in the world who understand and follow His tenets of virtue and righteousness.
Abraham Lincoln. 16th President of the United States. Dedicated his life to ending a culture wherein some people disrespected others to the point of considering them property. Supported respectability, dignity, and accountability. Shot and killed by someone who was terrified to hear the truth, viewing it as a fearsome challenge to his own comfortable way of life, which centered on people abusing others for their own benefit. Because of Lincoln’s role in ending slavery, his assassination made him a martyr to millions of Americans.
Mahatma Gandhi. Spiritual and political leader of India. Supported truth, integrity, and treating your fellow man with respect. Strong critic of hypocrisy. One of his most famous quotes: "I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and nonviolence are as old as the hills." Shot and killed by a person who was terrified to hear the truth. Gandhi’s message lives on, and he has become a martyr and role model to millions all over the world.
Martin Luther King Jr., PhD. Baptist minister and political activist; famous leader of the American civil rights movement. Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Supported racial equality and morality, and judging people by the content of their character [not the color of their skin, nor any other superficial qualities]. Shot and killed by a person who was terrified to hear the truth, a person who preferred an environment of indecency and disrespect, to one of morality. King’s cause succeeded despite his death and since his assassination, his reputation has grown to become one of the most revered names in American history.
There are many others whom I deeply admire for their courage to speak out against tyranny, cruelty, dishonor, and disgrace, but these four patriots provide my cornerstone role-models. I only hope to be able to show the same courage and loyalty in the face of outspoken, close-minded criticism as they have.
And here is one more point I would like to make. Many people who have lynched themselves onto the anti-fan side of this argument have often made statements like, "this is the way things are, and we aren't going to change that by complaining about it." Well, thank God that the above four people did not feel the same way in regard to their individual causes.
Every injustice and indecency deserves to be fought. All evil has to do to win is to have the side of good do nothing. To be complacent is the easy way out, and to say something is "always going to be that way so deal with it" is an apathetic and cowardly path. It is okay if you personally don’t feel something is worth fighting for. Just get out of the way of the people who do.
Oh, and since I like definitions, here is one more for a term coined, interestingly enough, by anti-fans.
True-fanism: n. the state of being a sincere and virtuous fan by holding and enacting with perseverance the belief that fans of any subject or person should conduct themselves in a decent and respectful manner toward that which they claim to be fans of.
And finally, I thought I'd relate something that one of my faithful watchers mentioned the other day: Eventually, good does triumph over evil.

I like how most of the real true fans are those fans who aren't even really *aspiring* to be true fans, the children who like something so much that they don't *want* to see it blighted by anything, those willing to defend their belief of just how cool something is to the point where fistfights break out in the schoolyard... Willing to stand up and fight for what they believe in despite the trouble they might land themselves in.

Wow. That's nice to know. But then again, this is the internet. Nothing that anyone says on the internet really truely matters, true fan, original artist or not.
